   MPressionist HDTV - Screenshots

The HDTV version includes all the features of the Pro SD and Pro HD - so the screens below are specific to MPressionist HDTV.

(Left) Overlay demonstrating dct_type feature of MPEG-2 for coding interlaced video. In essence, the encoder can choose interlaced or progressive on a 16x16 pixel block basis. The motion in the same frame. Note how the field_dct blocks correspond to the presence of field-motion (Middle). The motion vectors for the same frame. (Right)

All "Frame Overlay" displays can be viewed while the video is playing underneath. When paused, the arrow keys provide navigation within pictures in the thumbnail window; forward and backward in time.

(Left) Macroblock types in an I-frame (intra-coded) The intervening B-frame, a mixture of forward and backward coded motion. (Middle) The enclosing P-frame; a mixture of forward prediction and intra coding.(Right).

(Left) Overlay showing relative sizes of macroblocks in a frame. Higher blue bars more bits in a 16x16 pixel region. Quantization (compression) map. Higher red bars indicate more compression in a 16x16 pixel region.(Middle) Overlay of quantization (compression) values for each 16x16 pixel macroblock (Right).

(Left) Overlay shows which of the 6 (4 luma, 2 chroma) 8x8 DCT blocks have been coded in a 16x16 pixel block. By clicking on a specific 16x16 pixel block, one can examine the block contents; here we are looking at the (0,0) macroblock which has just one luma and the Cr block coded. The stream is using alternate_scan DCT coefficient ordering in the bitstream.(Right)

(Top row moving across) The macroblock inspector provides unparalled access to the numerical values in the compressed bitstream, how the mathematical transform progresses, and the visual results.
(2nd row moving across) 8x8 quantized (compressed) DCT coefficients in "bitstream order" the same coefficients re-ordered into the 8x8 DCT positions; the numerical results of the inverse quantization; the visual 'delta' as applied to a neutral gray.

(2nd row moving across) The 8x8 DCT values, after inverse transform; pixel (intra) or delta (motion-compensated) values; the applicable quant-matrix; global DCT basis functions (for reference).

MPressionist captures both frame motion vectors (up to 2 motion vectors per 16x16 block) and field motion (up to 4 motion vectors per 16x16 block). The exact numeric motion vector displacement (in half-pel precision) is available in the macroblock inspector. Even VBR-encoded DVD (The Terminator) material can contain stuffing (padding) to keep the bitrate from falling below a minimum amount. (Right)
