Every Artistic Domain has an Analytic/Quantitative Aspect
My aunt, who is a sculptress, once told me that you'll never find art through science, but you can find science through art. While I'm not sure I agree now, the basic idea is that to get the best final result from a creative undertaking, often a grasp of the technical side can become a key factor in producing your best work.

And the more experienced and seasoned you become, the more you want to know. Consider all the analysis tools available in Final Cut. And Google Analytics. MPressionist is a kind of mash-up between Google analytics and the graphs in Final Cut.

Last time I checked, my entire CD library was uncompressed PCM audio sampled at twice the sample rate of human hearing (nyquist frequency). Still, many audio purists believed that the CD, uncompressed as it is, does not accurately represent the original music. Hence, when DVD was introduced, they added a new, uncompressed high-resolution audio format.

Even when mastering audio for uncompressed formats many monitoring and metering tools are used to get the best possible quality, and to make maximum use of the available dynamic range.
