Description of MPEG Encoding |
View Bitrate Graph | | Single File - Flourish Spokane WA, based band "Flourish" SD MPEG-1 VBR average bitrate 1.5 mbits/sec.
One of the advantages of encoding DVD with MegaPEG is the quality degrades gracefully when reducing the bitrate.

 View Bitrate Graph | | This HD sample, a high-action Sci-Fi clip, is a 30s 1280x720px24fps MPEG-1 VBR from leastlikely.com. (full credits here).
The stream is approximately 5 megabits per second, which, strictly speaking, is a standard DVD bitrate - implying that a 2hr HD movie would fit on a DVD-R. Nevertheless, the primary purpose of this sample is to demonstrate HD delivery over the internet. The bitrate graph for the movie is given by the screenshot on the left. As you can see, here we employ a higher bitrate ceiling (18 Mbs) for 1280x720p.
This footage was encoded using a standard MegaPEG Pro HD "HD Movie" preset template, with the bitrate adjusted upward to the higher ceiling, and the Size vs. Quality moved two notches toward higher-quality. Encoding speed was approx 10:1 (2.7 Ghz G5).

We're finding that at HDTV bitrates, many clips can be encoded with Fast & Good Speed vs Quality settings - around 10:1 encoding time on a G5. This footage was encoded using a standard MegaPEG HDTV "ATSC HDTV" preset template, Best quality.

View Bitrate Graph | | Damian DeRobbio gives us a little SugarTooth - (320x240x24 ~290 kbps video, 64kbps audio) Internet MPEG-1 VBR
A handheld camcorder DV sequence, which is why the bitrate is a bit higher than the edit/tripod piece (below). Notice the spike in the bitrate when the camcorder is jumping around at the beginning of the clip.
We had some comments that the picture looks a bit too soft in the bitrate graph. If you look at the video in context (playing in QuickTime at the correct frame size) you'll see that it looks fine. |
